About Kike Calvo

Kike Calvo, award-winning photographer and bilingual journalist, was born in Zaragoza, Spain in 1972. After spending five years majoring in Economics at the University of Zaragoza, and obtaining a B.S. in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Idaho, he shaped his passion for photography into a career.

The 32 year-old photographer started developing his storyteller eye using a trial and error method at the age 17, and began taking photographs with a borrowed camera from his uncle. The Nikon, that never made it after that trip to Nicaragua, could be included as one of the many errors of his trial method.

His self-taught photographic skills have been cultivated and refined through professional training at The Charles Darwin Research Station and the United Nations Photo Unit. He has been granted professional certificates in Journalism (1999) and International Affairs (2001) from New York University.

Calvo´s work has taken him from the Galápagos Islands to the far away pristine waters of the Arctic, as well as Australia, Dominica, Aruba, Barbados, Virgin Islands, Israel, Maldives Islands, Bolivia, Brazil, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Egypt, Belize, Mexico, Canada, Portugal, Thailand and Costa Rica, among many others.

His photographic style is multi-faceted. Framed in a highly conservationist context, he has photographed the environment´s complexity, wilderness´ beauty and the magnificence of the world´s cultural diversity. His work, a combination of journalistic and artistic approaches, is currently represented by selected agencies in New York, Japan, France, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Poland, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands and Australia. Solo exhibits featuring his photographs have appeared twice at the United Nations Headquarters (first exhibit at age 25); the Art Institutes of Fort Lauderdale and Phoenix; the Instituto Cervantes in New York, in Chicago and Manila (Philippines); and the Pablo Serrano Museum and Pro-40 Art Gallery in Spain.

In addition to first class marine and underwater photography, Kike now supplies professional complete programs for corporations, from picture-taking to innovative up-to-date designing, consulting, and full color printing. He was recently appointed as Technical Field Adviser for Aquatica, the largest underwater photographic housing manufacturer. He also has the honour of being one of the four photographers sponsored worldwide by the company.

Calvo spends his time coordinating independent photographic assignments and managing his stock and press agency, VWPICS.com, when he is not exploring some remote corner of the world.
